Project Description
This project promotes improved governance in the Americas particularly with respect to (a) democracy human rights and fighting corruption; (b) the participation of women in public policy development; and (c) the rights of indigenous peoples. To achieve these objectives the project supports the College of the Americas (COLAM) in developing quality educational courses relating to these issues which are delivered through academic networks involving universities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The courses are designed for public sector officials the staff of non-governmental organizations justice officials and others who work on governance issues in the region.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2012) include: Training has been provided on governance issues (in areas such as human rights democratic practice gender equality and e-governance) to 7 756 participants (65.6% women). Course evaluations have been highly positive and indicate that the College of the Americas (COLAM) successfully addresses a particular niche with its regional and comparative approach and its use of distance technologies. COLAM's training networks have developed 48 online courses and 17 programs in 11 issue areas and have established partnerships or alliances with 43 different organizations throughout the Americas to support their work. These activities have contributed to increased knowledge of good governance values and practices among course participants and there is evidence that the knowledge gained through training is being applied to support policy and institutional reform efforts in participants' home countries.
