Project Description
The REDES project ("redes" means networks in Spanish) aims to improve the health status of selected vulnerable communities in Honduras by strengthening primary health care programming and expanding the coverage of health services. The goal of the project is to improve the health of children under the age of five and women of reproductive age in rural communities in the Departments of Copan and Santa Barbara. It focuses on decreasing maternal perinatal and infant mortality. Project activities strengthen networks for community health and build the capacity of communities health services municipal and local governing bodies social actors and local Red Cross branches to provide primary health care services.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (January 2013) include: (i) 11 876 infants were registered in the Integrated Community Child Health Program list surpassing the initial target of 8 006; (ii) 95% of these children completed their vaccination schedule according to Ministry of Health records; and (iii) women’s pre-natal and maternal health and nutrition practices improved demonstrated by a 13% increase (from 46% to 59%) in the number of mothers exclusively breastfeeding their children during the first six months a 23.4% increase (from 46.6% to 70.7%) in the number of mothers breastfeeding their children until two years of age a 9% increase (from 83% to 92%) in the number of pregnant women attending pre-natal check-ups and a 9.8% increase (from 77.9% to 87.1%) in the number of pregnant women attending more than four pre-natal check-ups since the beginning of the project. These results have contributed to improving maternal and newborn health including reducing the percentage of cases of newborn death by 11% (from 39.6% to 28.6%) in the Departments of Copán and Santa Barbara.
