Project Description
This project represents Canada's contribution to a multilateral effort to assist survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) mostly women and girls. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) works with other international agencies non-governmental organizations and the DRC government. Canada's contribution is centred in North and South Kivu two of the worst-affected provinces in the DRC. The project takes an integrated approach in order to respond to all facets of the problem: medical care psychological support socio-economic reintegration and access to civilian justice.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the end of the project include the following: 1) 61 105 survivors had access to medical services and 59 482 had access to psychosocial services; 2) 1 000 health care providers (doctors nurses pharmacy clerks) were trained or retrained and 118 medical facilities were provided with equipment and amenities; 3) 15 477 survivors benefited from socioeconomic support such as agriculture livestock breeding and trade kits for income-generating activities and training that enabled them to pursue these activities on a medium and long-term basis and 3 061 children benefit from support to return to school; 4) 11 legal aid clinics were up and running; 5) 5 474 legal cases were opened of which 2 537 were heard in court 1 036 decisions were reached and 824 accused were convicted; 6) a reliable system was established within the Ministry of Gender to collect and manage data on sexual violence and recorded a total of 22 051 cases of sexual and gender-based violence in 2013 of which 98 percent was perpetrated against women; 7) coordination mechanisms were developed among civil-society organizations multilateral organizations and the Congolese government to find common solutions to the phenomenon of sexual violence; 8) special units were established to protect women and children in the provincial Inspectorates of the Congolese National Police in North and South Kivu and police detectives in these units were trained in techniques for listening to victims and conducting investigations on sexual violence; 9) internal committees to fight sexual violence have been created in some judicial institutions such as magistrates’ courts. These results have helped to give victims of sexual violence better access to civil justice and quality health services.
