Project Description
The project funds the emergency repairs for Haiti's electrical utility Électricité d'Haiti (EDH). The project helps improve the financial autonomy of EDH lessening its reliance on subsidies from the Government of Haiti.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of this project (December 2012) include: financing emergency repairs that enabled Électricité d'Haïti to generate the power needed for its semi-autonomous electrical utility centres in Les Cayes and Jacmel. Repairing the electrical infrastructure and ensuring a steady supply of electricity has improved the quality of life of people living in the communities served and created new opportunities to help them generate revenue. The project also contributed to a 25% growth in electricity production at the Les Cayes power plant and a 50% growth in hydroelectric production by Saut Mathurine dam. As of April 2012 electricity is available 24 hours a day for 130 000 subscribers in Les Cayes compared to only 12 hours a day in January 2010. In addition 142 km of the electrical distribution network were rehabilitated.
