Project Description
The Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) is one of the largest support mechanisms for capacity building of civil society in Tanzania. The FCS is a Tanzanian non-profit organization funded by a group of like-minded donor countries and governed by an independent Board of Directors. To enhance civil society's contribution to poverty reduction FCS grants aim to improve organizational financial technical and managerial capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs); develop a more conducive environment for policy dialogue with the Tanzanian government; encourage and strengthen CSOs networking and build a positive image of the role of civil society. FCS provides grants to CSOs engaged in four key areas: policy dialogue with the Government of Tanzania; supporting and advocating for the needs of the vulnerable members of society; strengthening governance advocacy; and networks.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of May 2012 include: 1) over 776 people from more than 388 civil society organizations (CSOs) have been trained in fundraising organizational development project management monitoring and evaluation and financial management ; 2) 66% of CSOs supported through this project are likely to achieve their objectives are keeping good records and are achieving success with their activities and reaching out to communities; 3) over 700 organizations received grants (59% of which were provided to organizations working in rural areas); 4) 466 civil society organizations met with leaders at regional and district levels to discuss policy issues; 5) 10 key policies on Agriculture Child Development Disability Land Gender Environment Health HIV/AIDS and Youth were simplified translated and distributed to the public; 6) training on public expenditure review tracking capacity was provided in 133 Districts leading to increased public accountability and transparency including the posting of information on most village authority public notice boards regarding local government income and expenditures and more citizens’ demanding access to public services (especially at the local government level); 7) civil society organizations increasingly being invited by government at local and national levels to provide input into policy and legislative reform processes; 8) 68% of the input provided by organizations supported by the Foundation for Civil Society was eventually integrated into policies. These activities are contributing to strengthening the capacity of Tanzanian civil society organizations particularly in rural areas to implement development projects and to input on governance and development issues which is ultimately contributing to greater government accountability in Tanzania.
