Project Description

The project aims to increase girls' access to and success in primary and middle school education and to improve the quality of education for all students boys and girls. It seeks to improve the governance of the education system through building the capacity of district education officials. Partnerships with communities parents and teachers are strengthened to increase girls' participation in education. The project is being implemented in selected districts of Balochistan and Northwest Frontier Provinces focusing on districts where the funding gaps and education needs are particularly pronounced. The project aims to increase the number of girls enrolled in primary education and completing grade five; increase girls' enrolment in and completion of middle school; reduce the gender gap in school attendance up to grade 8; improve girls' learning achievements in primary and middle education; and increase the number of girls completing primary and middle school with the levels of self confidence skills and knowledge required to live better lives.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2012) include: (1) increase in primary school enrolment across 8 project-supported districts of Balochistan by 11% from the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years resulting in close to 290 000 more children attending school; (2) implementation of a child-friendly school model and standards in 700 schools in Balochistan benefiting over 64 000 children the majority of whom are girls; and (3) the upgrading of 72 primary girls’ schools to middle schools leading to the enrolment of more than 4 300 girls. These results contributed to improving access to education in Balochistan and Khyber Paktunkhwa provinces.
