Project Description

The aim of this project is to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations and government to develop communication tools in order to increase women’s access to justice and to lead to greater equality between women and men. Although new legislation protects the rights of women in Burkina Faso it is not yet widely known or applied. This project aims to use action-research to find the most effective ways to increase awareness and use of the law. Lessons learned are shared in Burkina Faso and Canada.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of end of project completed in 2010 include: Local radio stations reached about 100 000 people in hundreds of villages in eight regions raising people’s awareness of issues relating to domestic violence. Moreover 11 798 people (5 761 women 2 972 men and 3 065 youths) took part in discussions organized in rural communities on the subject of domestic violence. In addition 100 representatives from non-governmental organizations decentralized government bodies and traditional and religious authorities strengthened their capacities and skills in the managing and monitoring of information intervention and case management initiatives. 15 representatives from civil-society organizations were involved in developing training and educational materials for training community workers. Moreover the victim management units within four ministries are better equipped to train their intervention workers and over 100 community workers were trained to raise awareness of domestic violence in four regions of Burkina Faso. An intervention model was developed and tested in several regions. Case monitoring is increasing and enables greater cooperation among organizations. Thanks to this cooperation there is greater demand for services for victims of violence. These results helped to achieve the following intermediate outcomes: Cooperation improved between workers from government ministries and from civil society organizations. Workers became more autonomous thanks to intervention guides produced through the project. The number of requests for services increased.
