Project Description
This project supports the water and sanitation components of two UNICEF programs in Bolivia: PROANDES and AMAZONIA. The main activity of the project is the construction of small-scale water and sanitation facilities in designated rural municipalities in the departments of Beni Pando Potosi Cochabamba Oruro and Chuquisaca. At the same time hygiene education programs are organized through municipal and department-level technical units. The project also helps to establish and build the capacity of community water and sanitation committees as well as building capacity within municipal-level technical and infrastructure units. Finally through this project CIDA engages in water and sanitation policy dialogue at the departmental and national levels.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of December 2010 (end of project) include: 13 922 people have access to safe drinking water services; 1 267 have adopted good hygiene practices including schoolchildren; and 10 205 children have access in school to safe water and sanitation services and to 5 508 showers. As result the project has contributed to decreasing the risk of water-borne illness in 54 municipalities. Bolivian municipalities and departments co-financed 50% of the sub-projects supported through this project (a contribution of $1.5 million) and organized accreditation courses for 278 water and sanitation technicians. The project has reinforced the water and sanitation capacities of municipal authorities and has produced a sectoral plan for budget support program in the health sector. The project also supported the development of disaster preparedness plans with a focus on gender equality and cultural sensitivity.
