Project Description
The objective of the Justice Undertakings for Social Transformation (JUST) program is to foster an improved sense of security for Jamaicans. Specifically it aims to contribute to strengthening the justice system in Jamaica. The program works on three complementary fronts: (i) order in institutions - strengthening justice institutions so that they are better able to contribute to order; (ii) order in legislation - promoting legislative and policy reforms that better position the state to ensure security; and (iii) order in society - encouraging communities to provide input into justice system reform which leads to improved personal security. Project activities include: assessment of the managerial financial and organizational capabilities of justice-related institutions; strengthening government departments through expert advice research tailored training programs workshops mentoring and coaching; supporting the review of selected existing legislation regulations and policies; and supporting the creation and operation of neighbourhood resource centres that give poor urban communities better access to justice services. This is one of two parts of a project valued at $17.8 million.
