Project Description
The goal of this project is to increase the capacity of national governments and local communities in the Caribbean to respond to and manage natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods and to reduce their impact on the people of the region. Specifically the project aims to improve disaster preparedness within health sector institutions in the Caribbean and promotes the integration of health-related disaster risk management into policies laws and decision-making at the national level. This project is a component of the Disaster Risk Management Program.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2013) include: (1) a health sector disaster risk management assessment tool was developed and applied in 16 countries allowing these countries to have a comprehensive picture of the state of disaster risk reduction in their health sector; (2) 12 sub-plans for the national health sector disaster plan were developed; (3) the first module of a Health Sector Disaster Risk Reduction information system was developed to facilitate monitoring evaluation and reporting on safe hospitals; (4) over 900 health and related staff were trained to manage mental health and psycho-social issues in disasters; (5) over 380 people received training in mass casualty management; (6) 123 professionals were trained as safe hospital evaluators; (7) 14 countries have assessed the safety of one or more hospitals with 40 facilities assessed; (8) 16 hospitals have implemented safety improvements; and (9) a number of technical resources have also been prepared to provide guidance for mainstreaming DRR in the health sector.
