Project Description

This is a component of the Local Development - Nord-Est project. Its aim is to decrease the vulnerability of communes in the Nord-Est department to climate change. It includes building family cisterns to offset periods of drought; watershed management reforestation activities and the introduction of soil conservation techniques to reduce erosion and the risks of flooding; developing small irrigation areas; planting mangroves; and building the capacity of local authorities on environmental issues. All of these activities stem from development plans prepared as part of the main project component thus ensuring local ownership.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved by this project which ended June 2012 include: The installation of 54 water tanks has given local communities easier access to drinking water for use at home and for watering small vegetable gardens. Ongoing watershed development soil conservation and reforestation activities are helping to reduce soil erosion and reforestation activities are helping to reduce vulnerability to flooding. A total of 495 000 trees were planted including 150 000 for watershed management 45 000 to reforest a mangrove and 300 000 for pollination. Nearly 12 km of coastline and two beaches were cleaned up at the three sites. 240 officials were trained in environmental protection and adapting to climate change. Measures to reduce erosion were put into place for 213 hectares of land. These results have contributed to increasing the awareness of local residents and elected officials to environmental issues and improving environmental protection in the targeted areas.
