Project Description
The project helps improve rural living conditions in the department of Nippes. It promotes agroforestry models that ensure better management of natural resources and assists with agricultural marketing. The goal is to design promote and implement sustainable agroforestry production models and micro-watershed management models in the communes of Paillant and Anse-à-Veau. The project also aims to consolidate knowledge acquired about agroforestry in the commune of Petite-Rivière-de-Nippes. The project strengthens the capacity of local stakeholders to initiate and manage local development programs using a participative and democratic approach.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by this project which ended in March 2012 include: more than 4 700 plots (totalling 1 350 hectares) were developed with nearly 600 000 seedlings 21% of which are fruit trees. Ten agricultural supply chains from the production of food to the markets were supported. This helped increase the agricultural yield and the income of more than 4 800 producers (of whom 1 162 were women). Authorities in the three communes developed their communal plans and leveraged three million dollars in other sources of financing to implement 28 sub-projects. 96 employees (30% women) of local organizations were trained and became involved in the small watershed protection. There are 794 people (students and teachers of whom 440 are women) who directly benefitted from the environmental education program implemented during the five years of the project. These results have contributed to increasing the revenue of agricultural producers and improving their families’ food security or access to safe sufficient and nutritious food. It has also increased the forest cover which reduces erosion and helps to protect the local environment.
