Project Description
The project is designed to promote job creation via economic and community opportunities for grassroots groups. It encourages community ownership in the rehabilitation and construction of local social and economic infrastructure. Through local community organizations the project helps to develop capacities and expertise in maintaining and managing small community and economic infrastructure. After the earthquake on January 12 2010 six local funds in Haiti including this one were realigned to support rapid recovery projects that respond to the immediate needs of Haitians affected by the earthquake in the communes of Léogâne and Jacmel displaced persons and host communities in the Central and Artibonite departments and relief support for initiatives in Port-au-Prince. Projects focused on children and youth food security and economic growth in line with priorities set out in the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti and were implemented by locally-based Haitian organizations.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the fund (March 2012) include: The fund financed 33 sub-projects including 5 following the earthquake on January 12 2010. Results achieved since the realignment of the fund following the earthquake include: 60 000 young fruit trees and forest trees were planted on 54 hectares of land; three tons of seeds were distributed to 340 farmers (men and women); nine microentreprises managed by cooperatives were established; 2 304 cubic meters of gabions were laid to protect river banks; 37 500 young traditional fruit trees and 6 000 young banana trees were distributed to 269 farmers (179 men and 90 women); and 150 youth were trained in agricultural techniques information technology and marketing. These results contributed to early recovery following the earthquake. Overall the sub-projects supported through the fund have contributed to improving job creation via economic opportunities for grassroots groups in Haiti as well as early recovery following the earthquake.
