Project Description

This local fund supported good governance and human rights projects that promote democracy and peace in Haiti. Target sectors included peaceful conflict resolution civic education strengthening democracy respect for human rights and creating a culture of peace. After the earthquake on January 12 2010 six local funds in Haiti including this one were realigned to support rapid recovery projects that respond to the immediate needs of Haitians affected by the earthquake in the communes of Léogâne and Jacmel displaced persons and host communities in the Central and Artibonite departments and relief support for initiatives in Port-au-Prince. Projects focused on children and youth food security and economic growth in line with priorities set out in the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti and were implemented by locally-based Haitian organizations.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the fund (March 2012) include: The fund financed 26 sub-projects including 16 following the earthquake on January 12 2010. Results achieved since the realignment of the fund following the earthquake include: a maternity room an emergency room a pediatric room a laboratory and a pharmacy were set up and equipped; 438 people (267 women and 171 men) benefited from support for backyard farming through the distribution of 5 950 hens 400 colonies of bees 792 goats and 238 cages; the potential catch increased for 100 fishermen due to the restoration of ten fishing boats; the establishment of twelve premises and the distribution of tools helped to equip 200 women to improve the transformation preservation and marketing of seafood; and 3 000 leaflets were distributed to the population of Léogâne to raise awareness of the risk of possible natural disasters and the measures to take in case of disaster. These results contributed to early recovery following the earthquake. Overall the sub-projects supported through the fund have contributed to improving good governance human rights the promotion of democracy and peace in Haiti as well as early recovery following the earthquake.
