Project Description

This project supports the rehabilitation and construction of rural infrastructure using labour-intensive approaches. The project focuses on building or rehabilitating rural roads reforestation and terracing hillside agricultural lands in order to protect the environment and increase productivity. The use of local labour creates temporary employment for the most vulnerable citizens and contributes to increased economic activity in project zones. In the longer term the project aims to contribute to the diversification of the rural economy and to poverty reduction. CIDA's contribution is made through delegated cooperation with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) a significant portion of the population of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) adopts new positive behaviours and attitudes regarding issues including child immunization and nutrition (ii) use of treated bed nets child spacing delaying marriage and onset of childbearing birth registration gender equality and HIV/AIDS prevention; and (iii) services for women and children’s health support and protection from violence are sought and utilised at an increased rate throughout the DRC.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results obtained as of September 2010 (end of project) include: 257.6 km of road were rehabilitated opening up remote villages and notably increasing trade among them; 4 325 ha of soil and landscaping were stabilized and protected against erosion including a 160 ha belt protecting the Rugezi swamp. The hatchery (construction of 15 hatchery reservoirs) is making it possible to restock two lakes with fish. The project’s labour-intensive approach creates employment equivalent to 2 030 212 person-days. More than 3 million dollars have been injected into the area of intervention in the form of wages for labourers.
