Project Description

The Strengthening Civil Society in the Horn of Africa project strengthens grass-roots civil society organizations by providing training on organizational development financial management and gender equality. It aims to increase the capacities of civil society and the private sector in the Horn of Africa to work with and engage government on issues related to community development. This project takes place within the context of democratic changes in the supported countries that are creating opportunities for local stakeholders to work together to address a range of common issues affecting their development. The project enhances the ability of community organizations to form strategic partnerships in order to mutually support the development of their communities and sharpen their effectiveness in dealing with crisis and change.

Progress & Results Achieved

All 11 community organisations involved in the project increased their skills to develop partnerships and create changes they wanted in their communities despite many challenges in Somalia Sudan and Ethiopia. This resulted in increased cooperation between communities and traditional leaders local and state governments and the private sector. Results included securing 25% of traditional chief’s seats for women; obtaining financial compensation from an oil company that damaged the environment and livelihoods of a district’s inhabitants; convincing a sugar factory to install chimney filters to reduce pollution; launching a local and state government domestic violence program and advocacy for women’s legal rights; obtaining 30 scholarships for girls from the Ministry of Education; and being invited to join a State Government's Environmental Planning Committee.
