Project Description
This project aims to promote greater equality between women and men in Mali. Objectives are to strengthen the capabilities of key partners (government and civil society) to promote equality between women and men at the national and local level and to contribute strategically to improving the status and conditions of women and girls in law health reproductive health and governance. This project is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen the role and influence of the Ministry for the Promotion of Women Children and the Family as well as non governmental organizations (NGO) in Mali. By implementing two major components (institutional development and a program of targeted operations) this project helps to eliminate practices detrimental to the health of women particularly female genital mutilation. The project also promotes dialogue and action on issues relating to equality between women and men in communities and among local authorities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (October 2011) include: On November 24 2010 the Council of Ministers adopted Mali’s first National Gender Policy (PNG) which was developed using a participatory approach involving government departments and representatives of civil society organisations (CSOs). The Ministry for the Promotion of Women Children and the Family (MPFEF) implemented an awareness strategy to popularize the PNG in partnership with CSOs and close to 900 peer educators were trained across all the regions of Mali. The creation of committees for the eradication of harmful practices in the Sikasso region has contributed to reducing violence against women including excision (female genital mutilation) in the targeted areas. Women’s participation in community councils in the Segou area increased in both quality and quantity. Finally the Finance Act of 2012 includes the concept of gender-sensitive budgeting.
