Project Description

This project contributed to reducing rural poverty in Nicaragua. Its objectives included improving the ability of vulnerable groups to expand their agricultural production through increased access to clean water and sanitation services and electricity and through support for agricultural initiatives. The project worked with national ministries to support the implementation of initiatives at the municipal level drawing on the experience of local development organizations. <p> Project funding is provided through the monetization of Canadian products such as potash on the Central American market. The proceeds are credited to the Support Fund for Local Opportunities. This fund provided both financial and technical support to the initiatives being implemented.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2011 (end of project) include: The agricultural component implemented through the Nicaraguan Institute for Agriculture Research and the Nicaraguan Ministry of Agriculture respectively directly benefited 20 000 farmers with technical assessments in sustainable agriculture techniques benefitting 50 145 families with food security support that were affected by droughts. The water and sanitation component benefited 29 032 persons by improving access to safe water and better sanitation with 1 174 latrines built. The project has provided tanks to store water in rural healthcare centers and in 26 rural schools. The rural electrification component benefited 4 138 households (24 828 persons) which are now newly connected to the national electrical grid. This has directly translated into better living conditions for rural inhabitants of the northern part of Nicaragua.
