Project Description
CIDA supports the activities of the non-governmental organization Marie Stopes Tanzania a key partner of the Government of Tanzania in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals for family planning and reproductive health. In addition to targeting concrete health results including the integration of HIV/AIDS services this project is designed to pilot a model of private-public partnership with decentralized government councils in Tanzania and to ensure rural access of these services through outreach sites. It is expected that the results of the private-public partnership are shared at the national and local government and with other stakeholders involved in delivering health services for further application.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results from July 2005 to May 2011 (end of project) include: expanded access to and use of comprehensive reproductive maternal and child health and HIV/AIDS services particularly in remote and underserved areas of Tanzania through local health centres and mobile outreach; direct provision of these services to a total of 1 122 486 Tanzanian women of childbearing age newborns and children under five and improved capacity of local government authorities in 13 districts to partner with private service providers to scale up the provision of primary health services.
