Project Description

The African Development Bank's (AfDB) Water Partnership Program (WPP) works closely with African member countries to increase their awareness of and commitment to integrated water resource management policies and practices with the aim of increasing the sustainability and availability of water resources across the continent. The WPP provides grants to support water information and data management at the AfDB; integrated water resource management outreach and knowledge sharing; and the exchange of best practice and experiences. It is supported by the Netherlands Canada and Denmark.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project include: The programme helped to improve dialogue on key water sector issues through events such as the 2008 Heads of States Summit on water and sanitation the First and Second Africa Water Weeks and the African Sanitation conference. The program also supported the activities of thematic networks such as the Rural Water Supply Network and promoted dialogue on key sector issues between the African Development Bank and international and regional bodies including the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation and the African Ministerial Council on Water. The programme increased awareness in African countries of successful approaches to integrated water resource management through the preparation and wide distribution of studies guidelines and strategy papers on institutional and policy frameworks wetlands irrigation and water use in agriculture water supply and sanitation and public-private financing approaches in the water sector. Input to policy discussions and the sharing of best practices was achieved through a number of regional workshops and roundtables.
