Project Description
This project aims to build democracy and local governance to improve the sustainable living conditions in the cities and communities of West and Central Africa. The main objective is to enable the Municipal Development Partnership to carry out its mandate and to achieve its key strategic objectives as defined in its 2002-2010 action plan: (1) to place municipal institutions at the core of decentralization regional integration and development policies; (2) to act effectively to organize and strengthen Africa's municipal movement at the national and regional levels; (3) to develop and disseminate tools to mobilize local communities for economic development and poverty reduction; (4) to build the supervisory capacity of local communities to better deliver public services; and (5) to disseminate and capitalize on knowledge and information about the role of local institutions.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of latest report (December 2010) include: Several workshops have been held on financial decentralization municipal waste management and regional land-use planning. In addition to the workshops studies have been conducted including studies of strategies for municipal water and sanitation budget resources and management and harmonizing the resources of local communities.
