Project Description
The project aims to support Kenya’s Free Primary Education commitments by contributing to the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) Strengthening of Primary Education Project. In addition a locally administered responsive fund provides technical assistance to the Kenya Ministry of Education to support the implementation of Free Primary Education and the Kenya Education Sector Strategic Programme (KESSP) 2005-2010.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of June 2012 include: A significant reduction in the text book to pupil ratio through the provision of essential learning materials. Before the introduction of Kenya’s Free Primary Education often more than 15 children would have to share a textbook a number now reduced to between three to five children. As the Goverment of Kenya is working towards the target of a one to one textbook to pupil ratio the results witnessed so far are nonetheless a significant improvement and have an impact on the learning outcomes of children. Technical assistance provided through this project contributed to strategic input into the education sector's reforms undertaken in 2011 which will further build on the achievements of Free Primary Education.
