Project Description
This project supports the establishment of a sustainable and effective Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) to be run by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Developmentin Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The intention is to build upon and improve the existing market information system and to support the operation of a more systematic process of product price data collection at selected locations and the ongoing release/transmission of information to farmers through various uses of media and extension services. At the same time the project supports increased coordination between government departments also responsible for collecting and using agriculture market information which can be linked and complement AMIS. Finally the project supports capacity development for both the use of the system and the information while ensuring that this capacity is sustainable and is institutionalized within Vietnam organizations and government bodies. The expectation is that with increased access to market information Vietnamese farmers and farmers' groups can make better business and production decisions and in turn improve productivity and income earning potential.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of the end of the project include: the creation of information sharing models among farmer groups in Vietnam. Training was also provided on market analysis which has contributed to improved bargaining power among farmers. Key government officials have also been trained on agricultural market analysis to improve their capacity in supporting farmers.
