Project Description
The project facilitates the mobilization development strengthening and networking of community-based organizations (CBOs) and people's organizations in two districts in eastern Nepal that lack basic infrastructure government resources and social sector support systems. The project focuses on promoting equitable socio-economic development by empowering local people particularly marginalized and disadvantaged groups. It aims to improve health and sanitation in rural communities by increasing livelihood and employment opportunities for women Dalits and other disadvantaged groups. The project includes advocating and networking for social justice good governance and pro-poor development. It supports democracy programming by addressing the needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and ex-combatants especially women who are returning home after years of conflict. The project is implemented by Rural Reconstruction Nepal in partnership with local CBOs non-governmental organizations and relevant government agencies.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2012) include: 24 198 people benefitted from 57 sub-projects initiated by 39 Community-Based Organizations that improved irrigation drinking water schools toilet construction and feeder roads. Increased capacity of 150 Community Based Organizations to promote peace building initiatives in collaboration with local level stakeholders. In FY 2011/12 27 peace building initiatives were carried out under the project while outside the project 25% of Community Based Organizations were observed independently implementing at least one collaborative peace building project. 13 community health posts were supported with the basic equipments such as furniture pregnancy checkup equipments and fridges leading to improved quality of health services. 274 people trained for income generating activities including improved farming techniques house wiring mobile repairing village level animal health worker bamboo handicrafts and masonry. Peace Building from Below’s Circumstance-based model for community-based reconciliation drafted and presented to the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction for their nationwide replication strategy.
