Project Description
The Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in Borno State (PROSAB) project aims to improve the livelihoods of resource poor farmers and their income generating capabilities through interventions that increase agricultural productivity while reducing environmental and land degradation. The project's objectives are to: a) increase the sustainable agricultural productivity of male and female farmers; b) improve access of male and female farmers to agricultural input and output markets; c) reinforce policies for the sustainable management of land crops and livestock; and d) strengthen the capacities of project partners in the implementation of project activities. The PROSAB team has built partnerships with the Borno State Agriculture Development Program in charge of extension services the University of Maiduguri (the capital of Borno State) and the Community Research for Empowerment and Development a local non-governmental organization. The PROSAB team uses a participatory approach in the mobilization of communities in order to engage them fully in the success of this initiative. The project is expected to improve food security and to reduce environmental degradation in Borno State.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (January 2010) include: (1) Striga (a parasitic weed that has devastating effects upon crops) resistant technologies (i.e. crop rotation and improved seed variety) and drought resistant varieties have been made available to 949 farmers including 433 women; (2) Test plots using these new technologies have shown that agriculture productivity has nearly doubled; and (3) Improved crop management practices in targeted communities resulted in up to a 102% reduction in Striga population in cowpea fields up to 102% reduction in maize fields and up to a 76% reduction in sorghum fields.
