Project Description
The Vanni Rehabilitation Project represents one component of the larger ongoing initiative - the Transition Recovery Program in Sri Lanka - being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The overall objective of the project is to facilitate the sustainable resettlement of returnees and reduce tensions within and between targeted communities by improving their socio-economic conditions. The project is being implemented in five Secretariat Divisions in Mullaitivu and Killinochchi districts and targets 3 000 beneficiary families who are currently being resettled. It consists of an early recovery component followed by a longer-term recovery component.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of July 2011 include: over 1 700 returnee families were provided with livelihood inputs such as water pumps barbed wire sprayers sewing machines and sets of livestock in two districts; 28 community based organizations were reorganized and trained to conduct livelihood infrastructure micro-credit micro-enterprise development interventions and infrastructure maintenance; 119 beneficiaries were trained on modern agriculture practices to increase farm productivity; seven women’s rural development societies in two districts received seed capital to initiate revolving loans; 139 beneficiaries were provided with micro loans to initiate income-generating activities; rice mills were constructed and rice milling and food-processing activities commenced; and two multipurpose buildings were renovated. As a result of all of the above returnee families engaged in livelihood activities soon after their resettlement and developed renewed ownership of their communities.
