Project Description
The ability of water supply planners to identify and monitor viable groundwater resources in northern Ghana is increased through this project. The project produces an in-depth assessment of sustainable development of groundwater in northern Ghana. The assessment also develops the Government of Ghana's capacity to undertake hydrogeological assessments manage information on groundwater resources and undertake informed planning.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2011) include the following: 1) 27 water monitoring wells were built; 10 sampling and laboratory analysis cycles were carried out. 2) Hydro geological data from six (6) major stakeholder electronic databases (15 603 records) was collected validated and consolidated into one groundwater database. The Government of Ghana uses this database to manage groundwater. Research and academic institutions worldwide also have access to this database. 3) The staff of Ghana’s Water Resources Commission built their capacity to analyze groundwater and surface water using geographic information systems (GIS). 4) A long-term strategy was developed and approved to collect groundwater control data. 5) A WRC geo database management and user manual was completed to support groundwater management.
