Project Description
The project aims to enhance economic and social growth and reduce poverty by improving access to land and increasing the security of land tenure. Implemented by the Ministry of Lands and Forestry in target areas in each of Ghana's 10 regions the project is being funded by the Government of Ghana and six international donors.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2010) include: 1) the project has helped improve the national land administration system. 2) There is now greater collaboration between land agencies and an increased number of land secretariats: 38 Customary Land Secretariats have been created and land registry offices are operating in nine regions. This means that the average Ghanaian no longer needs to travel to the capital to register land which has resulted in more land transactions being reported and more deeds registered. 3) Seven thousand landholders have registered properties. Improved collection of the deed registration service changes at the Lands Commission Secretariats has made them more sustainable. 4) A Gender Strategy an Action Plan with gender sensitive indicators and gender training manual were completed and are being implemented 5) Drafting of the new Land Bill is underway via a consultative process.
