Project Description
CIDA’s contribution enables multiple Canadian partners (e.g. private sector companies governement departments and agencies universities) to provide technical expertise and training to the Government of China in support of policy reforms that contribute to sustainable development. China’s contribution covers local costs such as land and civil works equipment and salaries of staff. This project is part of Canada’s overall support to the reform process in China. The exchange of knowledge and experience not only strengthens policymaking in China it increases professional linkages and understanding between Canada and China and contributes to social equity and good governance. The project aims to strengthen Chinese policy-makers’ ability to formulate and implement policies in the areas of environmental sustainability human rights democratic development and good governance. Activities include roundtables study tours focused training action research seminars and other learning events.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of March 2011 include: Canadian technical assistance led to the establishment of a National Women's Education and Training System aimed at increasing the literacy rate of rural women and improving public awareness of gender equality. This program is now operational in women’s federations in all provinces autonomous regions and municipalities. CIDA technical advice supported the Chongqing government in establishing 37 service centres providing devices to assist the disabled and three centres for the fitting of artificial limbs in 41 districts and counties. There are 1.694 million people with disabilities in Chongqing accounting for 6.05% of the total population. Canadian technical assistance led to the adoption of a new Performance Audit Measure for the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to promote anti-corruption practices and the effective use of public funds.
