Project Description

Forty-five percent of Ghana's population lives on less than US$1 dollar/day. Food insecurity persists in the North of the country particularly during the rainy season from March to September and therefore Ghana continues to face the challenge of making substantial progress in food security. This project contributes to reducing poverty in Ghana by providing specialized advisory services in the sector of food security and agriculture for the agencies of the Government of Ghana (national regional and district levels) as well as in support to CIDA's food security and agriculture program's project planning monitoring and evaluation.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2015) include: (1) advisory services have helped to improve food and agriculture policy and to develop an investment plan and a performance measurement framework used to measure progress in implementing the policy; (2) the advisory services contributed to the Government of Ghana’s participation in the design of Canada’s latest Food Security Sector Budget Support Program (MAPLE) which included integrating important issues such as environmental factors and ensuring equality between women and men; (3) a draft national nutrition policy has been developed with the assistance of Canada’s advisory services; (4) technical advice provided has assisted the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in developing a capacity development plan contributed to in-country dialogue on nutrition strengthened the relationship between the Ministry and the national agricultural research institute and improved results-oriented annual reporting; and (5) increased awareness of decentralized planning at the regional level in the three northern regions. All of these efforts have contributed to strengthening the effectiveness of Canada’s development programming in Ghana.
