Project Description
The project goal is to contribute to sustainable management of forest and wildlife resources in Cameroon in order to enable this vitally important economic sector to generate long-term revenue to benefit all of the country. The project provides a financial contribution to a basket fund in order to enable the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife to effectively fulfil its public service missions. The basket fund finances the technical assistance and training required to implement FESP's five components: (i) environmental management of forestry activities (ii) management of production forests and adding value to forest products (iii) conservation of biodiversity and adding value to wildlife resources (iv) community-based management of forest and wildlife resources and (v) institution building training and research.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2011) include: Forested areas have grown to 5.3 million hectares of the 6.5 hectares planned. To date 77% of forest concessions have a management plan. There are ten certified forest concessions and 23 have a certificate of legality. There are 70 community forests that are managed according to a management plan. These and other results have contributed to more sustainable forest management better conditions for communities living along the river and Cameroon’s economic growth.
