Project Description
The purpose of this project is to improve legal and institutional mechanisms for the promotion and protection of the rights of children ethnic minorities and migrant workers in Southeast Asia. The project develops capacity of selected non-governmental and governmental institutions in the implementation of the Rule of Law and in influencing policy makers on related issues. Expected outcomes include more effective and sustainable regional networks in addressing human rights issues; improved legislative and policy environment for legal/judicial services; and greater access to services and protection by law for the target group.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project include: The project provided budgetary support to strengthen the capacity of the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking Forum Asia and the Working Group for an ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Human Rights Mechanism. The Working Group influenced the creation of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights the ASEAN Commission on Women and Children; and the ASEAN Committee for Migrant Workers. The project funded two publications regarding human trafficking laws and alignment of domestic legislation with international protocols. These results have contributed to strengthening the human rights capacities of various organisations enabling them to provide increased protection to children minorities and migrant workers throughout Southeast Asia.
