Project Description
The project fits within the context of Mali's 1998-2007 Ten-Year Health and Social Development Plan and directly supports its five-year operational program the Health and Social Development Program (PRODESS). Canadian support mainly targets community health centres (CSCOMs) in providing reproductive health services and community health associations (ASACOs) in mobilizing society and in managing CSCOMs. The project aims to help build the capacities of decentralized health facilities in the Kayes region. This results in better health conditions for women and children. The selected approach is to provide small-scale technical assistance as well as direct financial support for the operational program in the Kayes region.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project in August 2010 include the following. The rate of coverage for an initial prenatal consultation increased from 39 percent in 2002 to 86 percent in 2009. This allowed the Kayes region to meet the national standard. The assisted delivery rate increased from 24 percent in 2002 to 58 percent in 2009. The rate of full DTCP3 / PENTA3 vaccination of children under 12 months (diphtheria-tetanus-whopping cough-poliomyelitis 3 / pentavalent 3) rose from 47 percent in 2002 to 94 percent in 2009. The number of community health centres increased by about 10 each year from 88 in 2002 to 167 in 2009. There was a regular increase in the proportion of people living within 5 km of a health centre from 24 percent in 2002 to 53.13 percent in 2009. The proportion of people living within 15 km of a health centre rose from 52 percent in 2002 to 67 percent in 2009. Finally the prevalence of contraceptive use rose from 0.68 percent in 2004 to 2.24 percent in 2009.
