Project Description
The Gender Equality Support Project (GESP) is a locally administered project that receives proposals to fund sub-projects focused on gender equality aspects of governance health and education. GESP also has a research component to help strengthen the knowledge base in gender equality and a program on gender-based violence. The UK Department for International Development (DFID) is contributing an additional $2.9 million to this project.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project include: through 104 sub-projects funded under the Gender Equality Support Project: approximately 54 220 men 58 170 women 6 183 boys and 7 820 girls were reached with messages on the relation between gender equality and HIV/AIDS. More than 4 million people heard community-level roll-out campaigns on gender-related laws gender-based violence and reproductive health. CIDA led the Development Assistance Group on Gender. Technical support was provided to the government to develop gender equality legislation (National Gender Policy Prevention of Domestic Violence Bill). These activities have contributed to strengthening the capacity of government departments district assemblies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to mobilise donor resources and strengthen Gender Equality networks and partnerships and to improved coherence in gender equality programming by government NGOs and donors.
