Project Description
The project helped to make health and education services more available improve access to services and improve the quality of services offered to communities. Activities in the health sector aimed to help mainly women and children. They included reproductive care improving nutrition combating micronutrient deficiencies and preventing the spread of AIDS and tuberculosis. In education the fund supported basic education initiatives teacher training the provision of educational material functional adult literacy and technical and vocational training. After the earthquake on January 12 2010 six local funds in Haiti including this one were realigned to support rapid recovery projects that respond to the immediate needs of Haitians affected by the earthquake in the communes of Léogâne and Jacmel displaced persons and host communities in the Central and Artibonite departments and relief support for initiatives in Port-au-Prince. Projects focused on children and youth food security and economic growth in line with priorities set out in the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti and were implemented by locally-based Haitian organizations.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the fund (March 2012) include: The fund financed 71 sub-projects including 9 following the earthquake on January 12 2010. Results achieved since the realignment of the fund following the earthquake include: 375 students (227 girls and 148 boys) returned to school thanks to the payment of tuition fees; 3 431 students benefited from school kits; 495 students received school uniforms; 29 schools have been equipped with additional furniture enabling them to accommodate 962 displaced students; 9 000 students 180 professors and administrative employees were protected from diseases including cholera due to the installation of 20 hand-washing stations and drinking water outlets and due to hygiene training; and 217 families received seeds enabling them to plant their crops. These results contributed to early recovery following the earthquake. Overall the sub-projects supported through the fund have contributed to improving health and education services in Haiti as well as early recovery following the earthquake.
