Project Description
The project aims to improve the quality of education for indigenous and rural children especially girls in Southern Andean and Amazonian Peru through Intercultural Bilingual Education which provides education in the first language of the learner and integrates the learner’s culture. Some project activities include: (i) providing training to teachers in culturally-sensitive and gender-sensitive approaches to teaching; (ii) providing management training to principals and regional government education officials; (iii) supporting the production of quality learning materials; (iv) providing coaching to parents and community members to help them become more involved in monitoring the education system and reinforcing culturally and gender-sensitive approaches to education; (v) improving learning strategies; and (vi) strengthening the ability of regional governments to manage teacher training and financial and technical resources. This contribution enables UNICEF to expand its education program in Ayacucho Amazonas Apurímac Cusco and Ucayali regions in Peru characterized by extremely high poverty levels indigenous populations high prevalence of chronic malnutrition among children and overall lack of quality basic services including health education water and sanitation."
Progress & Results Achieved
As of March 2016: (1) 17 375 teachers and principals improved their ability to use culturally-sensitive approaches in education via training; (2) 4 600 teachers and principals developed their capacity to use approaches that are sensitive to differentiated needs of girls and boys in education; (3) 10 466 schools and Early Childhood Development centers received textbooks in indigenous languages and/or education materials that support intercultural bilingual education (IBE); (4) all five Regional Education Directorates monitored the use of IBE learning materials such as textbooks and exercise books; (5) 2 522 formal pre-school centers and 1 449 community-based pre-school centers received technical assistance technical accompaniment and/or material especially in remote geographic areas; (6) 3 810 intercultural bilingual education primary schools and 1 275 non-IBE schools received coaching training and/or educational materials; and (7) 1 952 regional/provincial and 76 national officers received training and technical assistance to improve their capacities to manage early childhood education and intercultural bilingual education. Since the project’s inception in 2010 over 500 000 children have benefited from the project.
