Project Description
The goal of this project is to improve the quality of basic education in Guyana by strengthening teacher training systems. The project targets aboriginal teachers especially women in remote regions of Guyana where teachers' literacy levels are low. The project provides these teachers with the opportunity to obtain secondary school equivalency in four core subjects and teacher training through distance learning. It also strengthens the capacity of educational institutions to deliver distance learning. By improving teacher training the project aims to improve low student achievement at primary school levels and to increase the percentage of students who complete primary school.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of October 2010 include: 349 teacher trainees were upgraded to teacher training college entry qualification requirements. 1 380 Early Childhood and Primary teachers were trained through distance education teacher training certificate programs. 1 219 head/deputy head teachers and supervisors graduated from the Education Management Certificate Program. A Distance Education Secondary program with 71 modules was developed and the Government of Guyana is implementing it. A Distance Education Unit was also established at the Cyril Potter College of Education to deliver teacher training.
