Project Description

This project aims to strengthen the protection and promotion of the right to health of lesbian gay bisexual transgender intersex and sexual and gender diverse communities (LGBTI+). Also it seeks to improve their access to comprehensive and quality health services in Latin America and the Caribbean particularly in Colombia and Panama. Project activities include: (1) conducting research to obtain data on the specific health needs of LGBTI+ people; (2) representing LGBTI+ people and organizations in the health sector; (3) making quality health services and resources available to these individuals; and (4) strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations to defend the rights of LGBTI+ people. Also the project aims to provide technical assistance in Colombia and Panama to strengthen the protection and promotion of LGBTI+ people’s right to health. This involves improving access to quality comprehensive rights-based and people-centred health services at national and sub-national levels. Other countries and regional entities also benefit from support through sharing of experiences and actions to strengthen efforts to promote health and rights.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved access to and uptake of quality comprehensive rights-based and people-centred health services and resources among LGBTI+ people; (2) improved enabling environment for rights and inclusion of LGBTI+ populations; and (3) strengthened capacity of LGBTI+ organizations and networks to participate in governance and influence health decision-making at different levels.
