Project Description

This project aims to ensure the equal enjoyment of human rights for people of sexual and gender diversity and others in vulnerable situations in Commonwealth Caribbean countries. This initiative uses legal empowerment to increase the ability of people subject to the law who are people of sexual and gender diversity to assert their rights and regain power over their lives. This empowerment of people of sexual and gender diversity through the law thus makes it possible to modify deeply rooted stereotypes in society and contributes to eliminating discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation and to the emergence of a more inclusive society that respects human rights. Project activities include: (1) improving the knowledge and appropriation of their human rights by people of sexual and gender diversity through awareness-raising outreach and training; (2) offering legal aid and court assistance services to facilitate recourse to the courts by victims of human rights violations; (3) supporting strategic litigation of emblematic human rights cases; and (4) advocating for structural change.

Expected Results

The expected results of this project include: (1) increased use of legal norms including those concerning sexual and reproductive rights; and (2) increased participation of civil society organizations and justice actors in the emergence of a normative framework more favorable to human rights. These include sexual and reproductive rights and the rights of sexually and gender-diverse people in Commonwealth Caribbean countries.
