Project Description
This project aims to promote meaningful and informed citizen participation in democratic elections. It seeks to strengthen the capacity of civil society in West Africa (Liberia Nigeria Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire) to counter disinformation and hate speech perpetrated throughout the election period. Also it aims to strengthen regional efforts through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased digital competencies and technical skills of partner organizations in the countries of implementation; (2) strengthened the capacity of civil society in the project implementation countries to design and implement innovative context-specific initiatives to combat disinformation including its gendered forms; (3) improved understanding of the information environment and its gender-specific dimensions by electoral stakeholders in the project implementation countries; and (4) increased knowledge and awareness of new approaches in addressing disinformation and hate speech including its gender-specific impacts and implications by regional actors in West Africa.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of October 2024 include: (1) trained 21 representatives from local organizations the Centre for Democracy and Development the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists and Innovative Lab-Liberia in digital competencies gendered disinformation analysis and innovative media monitoring tools. This helped to surpass the initial targets by over 230%; (2) facilitated knowledge-sharing through regional conferences and established the InfoSafeguard Hub Working Group fostering peer-to-peer learning among 94 members across West Africa; and (3) reached thousands through fact-checking campaigns media literacy initiatives and radio and television broadcasts to debunk disinformation and promote informed political participation in democratic processes.
