Project Description
March 2025 - A 7.7 magnitude earthquake and a 6.4 magnitude aftershock struck central Myanmar on March 28 2025 resulting in extensive destruction and loss of life. A state of emergency has been declared in 6 regions – home to over 28 million people. The earthquake compounds an already fragile situation driven by an ongoing conflict displacement and past disasters. With the support of Canada and other donors OCHA fulfills its mandate through activities that include: (1) strengthening humanitarian leadership; (2) establishing and overseeing coordination systems; (3) monitoring and reporting on humanitarian situations; (4) advocating on behalf of affected people; (5) supporting the assessment and prioritization of humanitarian needs and strategic planning; (6) promoting emergency preparedness; and (7) mobilizing funding for humanitarian assistance.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improving access to humanitarian aid to support vulnerable and at-risk populations; and (2) enhancing logistical services to support the humanitarian response in Myanmar. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
