Project Description
The project aims to reduce child malnutrition and improve school attendance and academic success by providing a daily meal to Haitian schoolchildren. The project seeks to increase income and longer-term resilience for smallholder farmers by promoting local food products’ purchase to support creating employment opportunities and building local capacities. Project activities includes: (1) providing a complete and nutritious daily meal to up to 100 000 preschool and primary school children across more than 400 schools in Haiti; (2) working with over 70 agricultural producer organizations to source food from smallholder farmers; (3) supporting over 200 smallholder farmers to help improve the quality of their products by financing the installation of processing facilities and equipment; and (4) providing technical training to over 200 smallholder farmers on storing and conserving grain quality control and reducing post-harvest losses.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) reduced preschool and primary school child malnutrition especially among girls; (2) improved attendance and school success of Haitian schoolchildren especially among girls; and (3) improved economic opportunities for small farmers particularly women in rural areas through purchasing local food products.
