Project Description
This project aims to further enhance the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional capabilities to prevent detect and respond to all types of biological threats whether natural accidental or deliberate in origin. Building on the foundation of the long-running Mitigation of Biological Threats (MBT) in the ASEAN Region Program Phase III of this project comprises distinct yet complementary elements across 4 thematic areas: (1) strengthening laboratory biosafety and biosecurity; (2) enhancing regional health security emergency preparedness and response; (3) strengthening disease surveillance field epidemiology and health security intelligence; and (4) enhancing and sustaining the health-security interface operation of ASEAN. This project will contribute to operationalizing the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED).
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) strengthened regional and national capacity for multi-hazard response to health-security emergencies; (2) improved biosafety biosecurity systems and capacities across the ASEAN region; (3) strengthened ASEAN Emergency Operations Centers network; (4) enhanced regional capacity in big data analytics and visualization for disease surveillance; (5) strengthened public health and animal health epidemiological capacity for emerging infectious disease response; and (6) strengthened health-security interface of the ASEAN Secretariat.
Progress & Results Achieved
Result achieved as of December 2024: (1) developed and adopted the ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Strengthening Regional Biosafety and Biosecurity.
