Project Description
December 2024 - As a result of the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces Sudan faces a complex and unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Its characteristics comprise massive protection violations the displacement of over 11 million people and dire levels of acute food insecurity and malnutrition in many parts of the country. More than 680 000 Sudanese refugees require assistance in eastern Chad. Also more than 180 000 Sudanese refugees and 630 000 South Sudanese returnees require assistance in South Sudan. With GAC’s support Plan International Canada helps provide life-saving multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA) child protection support and water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to vulnerable refugees internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities in Ouaddaï in Chad Upper Nile in South Sudan and North Darfur in Sudan. Project activities include: (1) providing urgent child case protection management; (2) establishing and operating child- and adolescent-friendly spaces; (3) establishing and training community-based child protection mechanisms; (4) providing multi-purpose cash assistance to the families of children and adolescents with acute needs; (5) rehabilitating boreholes to provide clean and safe drinking water; (6) establishing fully functioning and well-maintained WASH facilities; (7) launching hygiene promotion campaigns; and (8) providing WASH-related non-food items and hygiene kits to children adolescent girls and boys and their households.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased equitable access to quality gender-responsive child protection services resources and information for vulnerable girls and boys; (2) increased access to essential items through MPCA for the most vulnerable households to mitigate children's involvement in harmful coping strategies; and (3) increased access to improved water sources and hygiene services to reduce WASH-related diseases. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
