Project Description
This project aims to improve the nutrition health and education outcomes of schoolgirls and boys (aged 5 to 17 years) in the Mtwara and Lindi regions of Tanzania. Project activities include: (1) supporting schools in establishing and maintaining school gardens and farms with nutritious diverse crops such as biofortified foods fruits and vegetables; (2) constructing water systems for safe potable cooking and drinking water and establishing hand washing stations; (3) developing and rolling out training modules for school cooks on menu planning food handling safe and nutritious food preparation and storage practices; (4) developing school management committee functions to oversee school feeding meals; and (5) strengthening the national and sub-national monitoring systems to enhance compliance with School Feeding Guidelines.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased adoption of positive nutrition and hygiene practices among girls and boys in the Mtwara and Lindi communities; (2) increased attendance of girls and boys in schools; (3) increased consumption of diverse nutritious food and benefits among girls and boys from complementary health and nutrition interventions; and (4) enhanced performance of national and subnational stakeholders to govern sustainable school health and nutrition programmes for school girls and boys.
