Project Description

This project aims to improve education quality and reduce gender and racial disparities for Indigenous and Afro-descendent primary and secondary school students in Northwest coast of Honduras. The project seeks to develop Intercultural bilingual education and set up technology-based learning labs consisting of laptops and a Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning (RACHEL) digital library. It also aims to offer community workshops in 10 central schools. The project aims to directly reach 400 primary and secondary school teachers and 8000 students and indirectly 25 000 people in remote Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in Honduras. Project activities include: (1) increasing access to high-quality education materials in digital libraries; (2) providing teacher training and professionalization programs through distance education; and (3) creating educational resources that are linguistically culturally relevant and gender sensitive.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased use of technology-based and Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) educational resources by teachers mostly women; (2) increased practice of Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) in the classroom by teachers mostly women; and (3) improved contextualized instruction from a gender-equitable and rights-based approach by teachers majority women. These outcomes target the population in Indigenous and Afro-descendant primary and secondary schools of Northwest coast of Honduras.
