Project Description
This project aims to increase the United Nations (UN) peace operations’ effectiveness to prevent child soldiers’ recruitment and use by supporting the Centre for Civilians in Conflict. It seeks to improve the UN member states understanding on implementing the Vancouver Principles and improving coordination between UN peacekeepers and other child protection actors. Project activities include: (1) conducting research on child protection needs in Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo; (2) sharing research findings and recommendations with UN peacekeepers and child protection actors in the Central African Republic and South Sudan; and (3) conducting workshops and policy discussions with representatives from Central African Republic South Sudan the UN Headquarters in New York and UN Member states.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased awareness of needed political financial and technical support for gender-sensitive child protection in peacekeeping transitions by UN member states and UN headquarters; (2) enhanced awareness of gender-sensitive child protection capacity gaps in peacekeeping transition settings by peacekeeping stakeholders and other child protection actors; and (3) increased information-sharing and coordination on meeting gender-sensitive child protection challenges in peacekeeping transition settings by child protection actors.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of April 2025 include: realized 122 interviews (34 with women and with 81 men) 7 mixed-gender focus group discussions and consultative meetings on the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) transition. These meetings focused on child protection needs risks and the impact on child protection in context of the mission’s withdrawal.
