Project Description
Through this project Global Affairs Canada intends to expand the United Nations partnership on the rights of persons with disabilities (UNPRPD) joint program to 5 additional countries through a grant to the UNPRPD fund. Utilizing funding from GAC’s $100 million care commitment this project aims to assess and address deficiencies in the care and support systems for persons with disabilities in Colombia Kenya Mozambique Panama and Tanzania. The project ultimately aims to increase independent living opportunities for persons with disabilities especially women while improving the well-being of paid and unpaid caregivers who provide support to them.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased transformative changes in legislation policies and programmes that respond to the needs and rights of women unpaid and paid care workers including those with disabilities in the 5 selected countries; (2) increased recognition of gaps in national and local care & support systems including policies legislation practices and programmes relating to unpaid and paid care delivery hindering the support to persons with disabilities to live independently in the 5 selected countries; and (3) strengthening the capacities of the 5 selected countries to offer national systems of care and support that bring about change for women and take account of disability situations. This by advancing the right of people with disabilities to choose the care and support they receive and to make decisions in this regard.
