Project Description
This project aims on the one hand to help target communities make greater use of the mining fund for local development (FMDL) to improve the abilities of communities and organizations to implement local initiatives focused on peace and security. On the other hand the project seeks to strengthen the capacities and involvement of women girls and marginalized groups in local initiatives. The goal is to encourage their leadership and foster the development of inclusive and equitable initiatives within communities. By strengthening the capacities of civil society organizations the project aims to promote the participation of local communities in the management of mining resources. This seeks to ensure that the interests of local communities are taken into account helping to reduce frustrations and tensions that fuel violence conflict and illegal trade within the communities. Project activities include: (1) providing training to target communities and organizations in planning managing and monitoring local peace and security initiatives; (2) providing technical support coaching and assistance to target communities and organizations in implementing managing and evaluating local initiatives; (3) organizing thematic workshops on peace and security gender equality conflict sensitivity and inclusive local development; (4) organizing and promoting inclusive dialogue to address peace and security issues within the communities; and (5) conducting information and awareness-raising campaigns on the governance operation and terms of access of the mining fund for the benefit of the communities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved capacity of target communities and organizations to implement and manage local peace and security initiatives; and (2) strengthened capacities and involvement of women girls and marginalized groups in local initiatives. The goal is to encourage their leadership and foster the development of inclusive and equitable initiatives within the communities. The ultimate outcome of this project is helped target communities make greater use of the mining fund for local development (FMDL) to implement local initiatives focused on peace and security to strengthen social cohesion and to improve the security of residents within their own communities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) produced a community diagnostic report on the 3 communes where the project has been delivered and the 27 villages targeted; (2) produced a diagnostic participatory gender-sensitive report on the operationalization capacity of the mining fund for development to contribute to the stabilization of territorial communities; (3) trained 17 technical resources to use management tools and procedures related to the mining fund for development; (4) developed a community engagement strategy; (5) made aware of how the mining fund for development operates and is governed to 1 228 participants including 579 women; and (6) recruited 287 local opinion leaders and influencers including 76 women to help create inclusive dialogue forums in the 27 villages targeted by the project.
