Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). UNAIDS uses these funds and other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. UNAIDS’s mandate is to coordinate all stakeholders involved in the global HIV and AIDS response. This includes United Nations (UN) agencies governments civil society and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria. Guided by the 2021-2026 Global AIDS Strategy UNAIDS focuses on three main areas: (1) maximizing equitable access to HIV prevention care and treatment services; (2) addressing the social and structural determinants that increase HIV vulnerability; and (3) sustaining funding for HIV response. Canada’s support to UNAIDS contributes to maximizing the reach of all Canadian investments in the HIV ecosystem including through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes as stated by UNAIDS include: (1) increased awareness of HIV status by 95% of all people living with HIV by 2025; (2) sustained antiretroviral therapy access for 95% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection by 2025; and (3) access to viral suppression by 95% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy by 2025.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2023 include: (1) 86% of people living with HIV know their status; (2) 77% of people living with HIV who know their status are on ART; and (3) 72% of people living with HIV and on ART are virally suppressed.
